Short Cakes Cakery held their grand opening Saturday, but the store has been coming together for quite some time.
Nycole and Derrick Donelson started selling their Deep South Fruit Tea at the Farmer’s Market last year. Nycole, who has been cooking and baking since she was young, decided to put together some of her favorite cake recipes, and adapt them for cupcakes.
“I’ve always wanted to open my own restaurant,” said Donelson.
Donelson said when deciding to open a place, Mt. Juliet was her only choice. She has been living here since moving to Tennessee from Chicago, Ill. in 2007.
The store is truly a family operation, as their children, Rafi, Ryah, Isaiah and Derrica all help out.
There are 52 flavors of cupcakes and six different flavors of fruit tea to choose from.
Three flavors of cupcakes – short cake, chocolate peanut butter and banana pudding – are there everyday.
The several other flavors will be there based on what Donelson feels like making that day.
All cupcakes range from $1.60 to $1.85 based on what ingredients go into the cupcake.
“We wanted it to be affordable,” said Donelson.
Short Cakes Cakery also does catering for any type of event. They also do wedding tastings, and Donelson’s past a wedding planner makes it a special experience. Donelson says they bring out the linens and wine glasses so the couple can get a real feel for what their special day will be like. The restaurant will be expanding even more soon as they will be adding sandwiches, chips and espresso.
Short Cakes Cakery is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. They are closed on Sunday.
