The Tyler Cates American Legion Post 281 MJ Riverdogs 16U Junior team won the Post 236 Junior 17U Invitational Tournament over Owensboro, Ky. in Daffenville, Ky. Sunday.The Riverdogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Colt Blackburn singled to ignite the Riverdogs’ offense then Peyton Cole singled, scoring Alex Houser. However, the Riverdogs found themselves trailing by five in the seventh inning.
Riverdogs closer Curt Hoppe put away the final three outs in the sixth inning allowing the Riverdogs to score six runs of its own in the seventh. Jackson Hollinshead started the come from behind rally by beating out a wayward throw to first base. C.J. Kastner and Zack Austin loaded the bases with a pair of walks. Steven Swan then singled to left driving in two runs closing the gap to three. Alex Houser doubled scoring two more runs bringing the score to within one. Colton Morris laid down a perfect bunt but Houser was thrown out on a close call at third. Owensboro’s shortstop was unable to handle the rocket off of Hoppe’s bat and Morris scored to even up the game. Landon Nix then came in and hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Hoppe for the win.
The Riverdogs had a no quit attitude coming from five or more runs behind in the bottom of the seventh inning in the first and last game of the tournament.
Notable performance: Curt Hoppe threw a “no-hitter” in game 3 of the tournament with eight strike outs while walking only three batters for a 1-0 win.
