The Lake Forest Acres Garden Club will present a workshop, Introduction to Hyper-Tufa, Saturday, Sept. 8, at 9 a.m. and again at 11 a.m. at Garr’s Rental & Feed in Mt. Juliet. During the workshops, gardening enthusiasts will create their own Hyper-Tufa planter to take home and fill with the plants of their choice.“Hyper-Tufa planters are very popular with container gardeners because they are porous, lightweight, easy to make, and a variety of plants do well in them,” said Roy Garr, co-owner and president of Garr’s Rental & Feed.
Hyper-Tufa is created with a mixture of Portland cement, peat moss and vermiculite, and is much lighter than traditional concrete planters. The planter cures over several days; the finished product is recommended for planting succulents, decorative grasses, bonsai and rock garden plants.
At the Sept. 8 workshops, Garr’s will supply all the needed materials, including a dust mask and the bowl-mold for the planter which will be a very manageable size, approximately 11” x 6” or roughly the size of a large salad bowl. Participants should bring their own heavy latex-type gloves.
The workshop cost is $15 plus three (3) canned goods which will be donated to the Mt. Juliet Help Center. Each workshop session is limited to 20 spots; a group of up to two adults and one child may work on one Hyper-Tufa planter. Reservations are required and will be accepted until the workshop sessions are full. For reservations, call 754-2777.
