Special to The Chronicle
A wish was granted recently for Mt. Juliet High School basketball player and breast cancer patient Ashley Roby thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Middle Tennessee, which will send her and her family on a trip to Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.Earlier this year, Ashley, a sophomore at MJHS, was diagnosed with breast cancer and is the youngest breast cancer patient at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. In February, Ashley underwent a bi-lateral mastectomy and following surgery, her initial scans were clear and required no chemotherapy or radiation treatments.
Ashley Davis, spokesperson for the Middle Tennessee Make-A-Wish Foundation said Ashley was eligible for a wish and her first choice was to go to Disney World, a place she had wanted to visit since childhood.
“Ashley learned that her wish was coming true on Sept. 26 at Birdies, Bogeys and Bones golf tournament,” Davis said.
The tournament was held at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin and was sponsored by Famous Dave’s restaurant. At the tournament, Ashley was taken by Famous Dave’s in a helicopter for the ceremonial golf ball drop.
She shared her story and struggles in her fight against breast cancer with the tournament’s players and sponsors. To Ashley’s surprise, her friends and family were there to help the Make-A-Wish Foundation announce that her wish to go to Disney World would be coming true.
“Her mom, step-dad and younger brother are all going with her,” Davis said.
According to their mission statement, the Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience and forget about their long journey of illness through having their wish granted.
In September, Ashley participated in Sherry’s Run for the second year, forming her own team in 2011 to support those with breast cancer, and posting the seventh-fastest time for women in her age group that year. In 2012, Ashley walked the course with her teammates, friends and family.
