Elzie Patton Elementary hosted its 2nd Annual Author’s Night on Tuesday, Jan. 22. Author Michael Shoulders entertained and educated students at four presentations throughout the day. He is the author of over a dozen books, including V is for Volunteer and T is for Titanic. His presentations included magic tricks, a Tennessee rap and the writing and illustrating process.Parents and students returned to the school Tuesday evening to hear Shoulders again. He read to the students and talked to parents about ways to encourage their children to read more. He also sold and autographed books.
In the weeks before Author’s Night, students in every grade completed writing assignments. Those pieces of writing were on display after the author’s presentation. In addition, teachers chose three students from each grade level who demonstrated excellent writing skills. Those students enjoyed a cupcakes and cocoa reception with the author during the school day and their writing was on a special display that evening.
Third grader Pishoy Zaki said, “My favorite part of Mr. Shoulders’ presentation was the magic trick. I also loved the books, especially T is for Titanic.”
Fourth grader Ella Mercer also enjoyed Shoulders’ presentation. “I liked it when he did the rap. It was funny when he rapped V is for Volunteer. I also liked it when he read to us at Author’s Night.”
Ella was one of the three students from her grade that attended the cupcakes and cocoa reception. She said the best part of the reception was getting to meet and hang out with Mr. Shoulders. “We were able to ask him questions and learn about being a real author.”
Elzie Patton Elementary’s Author’s Night was a fun and educational event for students, teachers and parents.
