Mt. Juliet completed a regular season sweep of rival Wilson Central with two wins Friday.
The Lady Bears came away with a 57-49 win, and the Bears won 57-46.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Bears repeatedly attacked the post with Sally McCabe and Ronjanae DeGray. Despite missing a large portion of the game with foul trouble, McCabe led the way with 23 points. DeGray had 21.
Mt. Juliet jumped out to a 12-2 lead, and held a 16-7 lead at the end of the first. McCabe picked up her third foul in the second quarter, but Central wasn’t able to pull much closer, trailing 28-20 at the break.
McCabe picked up her fourth foul in the third, and Central kept within striking distance at the end of the quarter, 36-31.
A jumper by Autumn Hopkins cut the Lady Bear lead to 38-35 in the fourth, but Mt. Juliet went on a 10-2 run at that point to put the game out of reach.
Rachel Bean led Central with 13 points despite leaving the game with a leg injury.
In the boys’ game, Nolan Chowbay pitched in 21 points to help the Bears to the 57-46 win.
It was a tight first half, as the score was just 9-6 in favor of Mt. Juliet at the end of the first, and a Hunter Gilbert three just before the buzzer gave the Bears a 22-17 lead going into the break.
Mt. Juliet dominated the third quarter, and a Nolan Chowbay three pointer as time expired in the quarter made the lead 41-24 going into the final quarter.
Central was able to eat into the lead a bit in the fourth, but the Bears held on for the win.
In addition to Chowbay’s 21, Gilbert added 10. Jacob Williams led Central with 14. Blake Huffman added 11, and Deante Miller ended with 10.
On Monday, the Lady Bears gave No. 1 Riverdale (USA Today No. 5 in Nation) all it wanted in the first half, but couldn’t hang on to the lead in a 67-47 loss.
Mt. Juliet led the Lady Warriors at the half, 28-22, but Riverdale dominated the third quarter en route to the victory.
It was the 49th straight win for the Lady Warriors.
McCabe led the Lady Bears with 22 points.
DeGray had 12.
The Lady Bears will open the District 9-AAA tournament Thursday by hosting Portland. That game tips off at 7 p.m.
In the boys game, Thomas Sharpe hit two free throws with six seconds left to lift the Bears to a 33-31 victory over Riverdale.
Sharpe led the Bears with 10 points.
The Bears will kick off the District 9-AAA tournament Friday. They will host Beech at 7 p.m.
The Central Lady Wildcats will host Station Camp Thursday in the first round of the District 9-AAA Tournament. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
The Central Wildcats will host Gallatin Friday. Tipoff for that game is 7 p.m.
The semifinals and finals will be played at Station Camp High School on Saturday and Tuesday.
