The first piece of the Providence Central development, Creekside at Providence Central, got a site plan approved at the planning commission Thursday.
The apartment complex will be located on Providence Parkway back behind where Regions Bank is now.
Brian Abston and Art Giles had concerns about another apartment complex in the area because of the crime and overcrowding it could bring to the area. Giles said he had two people approach him about having another apartment complex in the Providence area.
“People are getting concerned,” said Giles.
Chairman Luke Winchester and Mayor Ed Hagerty voiced concern that there were several issues that still needed to be taken care of on the site plan, and we’re afraid that if they approved the site plan, things would change once those problems were solved.
“I’m afraid we are putting the cart way before the horse,” said Winchester.
In the end, the commission voted 5-2 to approve the site plan, with Abston and Giles voting against it.
The commission also approved a rezone request for Hackney Farms, which is a single family home neighborhood that will be located near Mt. Juliet Commons and across from the road leading to W.A. Wright Elementary.
