MT. JULIET – Mt. Juliet baseball’s streak of consecutive state tournament appearances came to an end Saturday after a 3-2 loss to Brentwood in the sectional game.
It is the first time in six years that the Mt. Juliet baseball team will not be participating in the Spring Fling. However, the streak of consecutive region championships is still going. The Bears won their sixth straight region title with a 6-5 win over Rossview.
After a Rossview run in the first, Mt. Juliet went to work, getting four runs of their own. The first came on an error, scoring Zach Ehrhart, which was followed two batters later by a two RBI double by Marshall Gei. Chris Johnston added a RBI single to make it 4-1 at the end of the first.
That score held until the bottom of the third when the Bears added onto their lead with a RBI groundout to second by Ehrhart.
Rossview got two runs back in the top of the fourth and tied it at 5-5 in the top of the sixth.
Mt. Juliet had the answer as an RBI single by Robby Amity scored Cody Carr for the game winning RBI.
Austin Smith came in and shut the door to preserve the title for the Bears.
Saturday, the Bears faced Brentwood in the sectional game. Mt. Juliet had the lead until the sixth inning, but Brentwood picked up a run, and then the go ahead run in the top of the seventh.
Mt. Juliet struck first in the second inning. With runners at first and third, Kyle Grace attempted to steal second, pulling the shortstop to the bag. Cody Carr found the hole with a single, scoring Gei.
Gei would extend the lead in the third with RBI single, scoring Amity.
Brentwood got a run in the fifth, and tied it up in the sixth. Hunter Anderson had a bloop single in the top of the seventh which dropped into shallow right field and scored the go ahead run. The Bears were not able to get a runner on in the bottom of the inning to extend the game.
Mt. Juliet finished the season 26-12, and collected their eighth straight district title in addition to their sixth straight regional title.
