Wilburn Allen Withers, 87, Hermitage, passed from this life to eternal life Sunday May 26, at Summit Medical Center.
Allen was born Jan. 20, 1926 in Wilson County. He was the son of the late Jacob and Mary Hurt Withers. He served in the 38th Cavalry under General George Patton’s Third Army. He participated in three major battles. After his service in the military, he returned home to build a life with his sweetheart, Louise Jackson. He then faithfully worked for both the Swift Company and Oscar Mayer, retiring after 43 years. A man of great faith, he played the organ, lead singing, taught Sunday School and was a deacon at Hermitage First Baptist Church, where he was a charter member. In later years, he was active in Franklin Road Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Rollie, James, Johnnie and Martin Withers; sisters, Sally Withers and Estelle Rector and grandson, Matthew Withers.
He is survived by: cherished wife of 65 years, Louise Withers; son, James Allen Withers; beloved daughter-in-law, Paula Withers; sister, Margaret Gregg.
A Life Celebration Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at Bond Memorial Chapel with Rev. Allen Withers officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Cowgill Community Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be William Withers, Harold Withers, Ronnie Withers, Sam Crimi, Dennis Dukes, Jason Marlin, Danny Myers and Dr. Barry Stuman. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. James Elrod, Dr. Tod Bushman, Dr. John Coursey, Virgil Darnell and Gary Jackson.
