Cole Family Practice in Old Hickory has joined forces with the Vanderbilt School of Nursing to provide prenatal care provided by three Certified Nurse Midwives to the area.

Vanderbilt’s Nurse Midwives are sought out by women all over the middle Tennessee area, and have seen a big growth in popularity in recent years. Certified Nurse Midwives guide women through their pregnancy while educating them, and empowering them to make intelligent choices in the process.  It is an alternative to a traditional OB/GYN, who may have a strict program for pregnant women to follow, and the woman may feel she has no say in her process.

Amy Cole of Cole Family Practice is a nurse midwife and graduate of Vanderbilt. She said that she has had Vanderbilt graduate students work for her in the past, so she had a good working relationship with the school. They approached her about possibly helping them branch out their Nurse Midwifery program, and she jumped on board.

“It’s a great thing for the midwifery childbirth community,” said Cole. “It adds another option for childbirth care, and makes it much more accessible.”

Midwives have been around since ancient times. Nurse midwife patients have shorter lengths of stay, lower C-section rates, fewer lower birth weight infants and higher breastfeeding rates. According to the American College of Nurse-Midwives, 85 percent of all births in the United States are considered normal and do not require medical intervention.

Nurse Practitioner Meg Rowland Boyls is excited about the addition to Cole Family Practice and thinks the community will benefit greatly. She said it will give women the option for a more natural approach to pregnancy, as well as providing the already quality family care patients receive at Cole Family Practice.

“This is a good expansion of access of care,” said Boyls.

Cole Family Practice welcomed Annie Sorensen, Bethany Sanders and Erin Monberg Jan. 2. All are Certified Nurse Midwives, are faculty members at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, and hold privileges for deliveries at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Sorensen said she got into the profession because she thinks pregnancy is a very unique time for a woman because the woman’s concerns shifts from not only her personal health care, but to that of her family.

“Pregnancy is a very unique time to educate a woman,” said Sorensen.

Sorensen said that they are a perfect fit for a place like Cole Family Practice which strives to achieve a more natural form of health care. She believes that it is inspiring to help empower a woman to make choices about her health.

“You get to take part in this, and it’s very exciting,” said Sorensen.
