Spring Sports roundup, March 18

Mt. Juliet finished the Scenic City Classic in Chattanooga with a 3-1 record. 

After beating Rossview Tuesday, 3-1, the Bears hit the road to Chattanooga. They beat NW Whitfield (Ga.), 15-9, lost to Baylor, 4-1, but then beat Boyd Buchanan 15-5 and St. Benedict, 10-0. 

Mt. Juliet opens district play Wednesday against Beech, 7 p.m. The Wilson County Invitational starts Thursday. The Bears will play Page at 2 p.m., then play Summit Friday at 2 p.m. Later than evening at 7 p.m., the Bears host Trousdale County. They will close Saturday with Giles County at 12:30 p.m.

MJ softball gets wins at Commando Classic

Mt. Juliet softball picked up several wins at the Commando Classic in Hendersonville. The Lady Bears beat Science Hill 2-0, Clarksville 7-3, Bolton 4-0, David Crockett 8-1 and Lincoln County 9-0. Mt. Juliet opens district play Thursday against Portland, 4:30 p.m., then travels to Siegel Friday for a 6 p.m. game. 

Wilson Central baseball opens

The Wilson Central Wildcats return home from the Gulf Shores Nike Classic to open district play Wednesday at Hendersonville. That game starts at 7 p.m. The Wildcats are also playing in the Wilson County Invitational. They will host White House Thursday at 5:30 p.m., Giles County Friday at 2 p.m., Summit Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and Page Saturday at 3 p.m.

Central softball finishes 3rd at Commando Classic

Wilson Central competed in The Commando Classic in Hendersonville as well.   Wilson Central finished 1-2 in pool play, but due to a 3-way tie for second, Central was able to get the No. 2 seed.  In the first round of elimination, Wilson Central beat Central Magnet 13-4 and followed that up with a win over Hendersonville 8-1.  Wilson Central then advanced to play Dickson County, beating the Lady Cougars 5-3 and advanced to play Seymour.  Central was able to capitalize on a few Seymour errors and push two runs across the plate, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 win, and placing Central in the semifinals against Sparkman (Ala.)

Central started their game against Sparkman with two straight singles before being shut down the rest of the game, losing 4-0, and finishing third place overall.  Sparkman was not able to play in the championship game against Gibbs due to a new rule the AHSAA put in place this year stating no team can play in a game on a Saturday past midnight, making Gibbs tournament champions.

Wilson Central placed 4 girls on the All-Tournament Team. They are senior Brittany Wiseman, juniors Hannah Bodenhorn and Morgan Powell, and sophomore Katie Eakes.

MJCA Lady Saints sweeps Glencliff, Webb

The MJCA Lady Saints opened the softball season by sweeping Glencliff, Tuesday, March 11. The Lady Saints outscored Glencliff 12-1 and 16-1 to start the season 2-0. Pitcher Caitlyn Smith, an eighth grader, pitched two complete games allowing five hits in the first game and one hit in the second game. Freshman catcher Abi Hildabrand hit a home run in the second game.

The Lady Saints swept Knox Webb 16-1 and 16-6 Thursday

Winning pitcher Smith pitched two full games allowing only one hit in the first game. Freshman Skylar Bowles went 2-for-3 with a triple in the first game.  Smith went 3-for-3 with a triple and sophomore Liz Russ went 2-for-3 in first game. Sophomore Olivia Gonzalez had a homerun in the second game.

MJCA baseball gets win over Red Boiling Springs

The Mt. Juliet Christian baseball team was swept by Knox. Webb Thursday, 19-0 and 10-0, but rebounded with a 14-4 win over Red Boiling Springs Saturday. The Saints lost to McGavock Monday, 8-7.
