Greg Lasater, a deputy with Wilson County Sheriff’s Department and member of Wilson County Board of Education has resigned from both positions.

The Wilson Post was informed around 7 Thursday night by Wilson County Sheriff Robert Bryan that Lasater had resigned from the department. This decision by Lasater comes on the heels of his resignation from the school board Thursday afternoon.

Lasater has been under investigation by the Sheriff’s Department regarding his use of the department’s credit card.

He had been suspended with pay from the Sheriff’s Department as of Wednesday, Bryan said.

The sheriff said it was brought to his attention that Lasater, who also served as a school resource officer at Winfree-Bryant Middle School in Lebanon, reportedly had some discrepancies in relation to gas purchases on the department credit card.

“We review our bills and look for this type of thing. You don’t ever want to have to deal with it – you expect to have employees that are honest and trustworthy,” he said. “This happens in other professions all the time. We saw something that was not right and we are going to deal with it properly.”

Bryan said these discrepancies were first noticed when reviewing bills from last month and that although the amount of money they are dealing with does not appear to be “large,” the department is still compiling numbers.

“We have been consulting with the District Attorney, and once we complete this investigation we will turn it over to him. There could be possible criminal prosecution,” he added. “As sheriff, I have to protect the citizens of Wilson County.”

District Attorney Tommy Thompson said he expects to hear more details regarding the investigation on Friday.

“It will be treated like any other case that we handle. I will review the information and it will be submitted to the grand jury and go from there. I am aware of it, but have not seen any details yet,” Thompson told The Post on Thursday.

Attempts to contact Lasater for comment were unsuccessful. His home number listed on the school board’s website has been disconnected, and his cell phone voice mailbox was full.
