Short Cakes Cakery, recently named Best of the Best of Wilson County, may have been open for a short time, but they have been coming together for quite awhile.

Nycole and Derrick Donelson started selling their Deep South Fruit Tea at the Farmer’s Market last year. Nycole, who has been cooking and baking since she was young, decided to put together some of her favorite cake recipes, and adapt them for cupcakes.

“I’ve always wanted to open my own restaurant,” said Donelson.

Donelson said when deciding to open a place, Mt. Juliet was her only choice. She has been living here since moving to Tennessee from Chicago, Ill. in 2007.

The store is truly a family operation, as their children, Rafi, Ryah, Isaiah and Derrica all help out.

There are 60 flavors of cupcakes and six different flavors of fruit tea to choose from. Three flavors of cupcakes - short cake, chocolate peanut butter and banana pudding - are there every day. The several other flavors will be there based on what Donelson feels like making that day.

All cupcakes range from $1.60 to $2 based on what ingredients go into the cupcake.

“We wanted it to be affordable,” said Donelson.

Catering is currently available for corporate, private, educational and governmental agency events as well as for Weddings, showers, etc.  That includes cupcakes as well as sandwiches, salads and much more. Catering orders may be faxed to (615)224-8188.

They also do wedding tastings, and Donelson’s past a wedding planner makes it a special experience.

Donelson says they bring out the linens and wine glasses so the couple can get a real feel for what their special day will be like.

The restaurant is expanding even more as they will be adding sandwiches, salads and chips Sept. 4, and have already added European Gourmet Coffee. You can get flavors like Cinnamon and Brown Sugar, Hazelnut Crème, Classique and Vanilla Crème Brulee.

The Deep South Fruit Tea that got them their start is available as well. It is in sweetened and unsweetened varieties of their Original Blend, their Green Tea Fruit Tea and the Original Blend-Decaf.

Short Cakes Cakery is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. They are closed on Sunday.

Customers can start calling in orders as early as 9 a.m., or order online at www.shortcakescakery.com.

Short Cakes Cakery is located at 4037 N. Mt. Juliet Rd. They can be reached at (615)257-0016.
