MJ teams grab top seeds PDF Print E-mail

Both Mt. Juliet basketball teams will be the top seeds at the 9-AAA District Tournaments. The teams finished off season sweeps of Wilson Central, with the girls winning 48-30 and the boys winning 55-39. In the boys’ game, the Bears finished the game on a 13-0 run to get the win over their cross town rival, who were playing without big man Malcolm St. Louis.
Central actually led after one, 18-13, but a 12-2 second quarter for the Bears gave them the 25-20 lead going into the break. Central closed a little closer in the third, as Mt. Juliet led 36-32 going into the fourth. The Wildcats made it 42-39 in the fourth, but the Bears didn’t allow a point after that. Caleb Chowbay led Mt. Juliet with 15. Quinton Hall had 11 and Brandon Shepard finished with 10. Dee Oldham led Central with 15.

In the girls game, the AAA No. 6 Lady Bears slowly pulled away from Central in the 18-point win. 
The Lady Bears led 13-9 after one, and built their lead to 19-11 by the half. 
It was 35-23 going into the fourth. 
Caya Williams led Mt. Juliet with 27. Mimi Jackson had 12. Taylor Peterson led Central with 16.

The girls had another battle to the wire with AAA No. 1 Riverdale, but came up short 62-58. Mt. Juliet actually led in the fourth, but Riverdale went on a 12-0 run to pull ahead. The Lady Bears led 18-17 after one, and the game was tied 32-32 at the break. Mt. Juliet pulled ahead by seven at the end of the third, but Riverdale went on their run in the fourth and Mt. Juliet couldn’t retake the lead. Williams led Mt. Juliet with 20. Sally McCabe added 18. Jackson had 12. Shacobia Barbee and Tyisha Petty both had 19 for Riverdale.

The boys had four players in double figures to end the regular season with a 73-62 win over Riverdale. 
Chowbay finished with 22. Chandler Fraazier had 12 while Hall and Shepard both finished with 11. Donya Burnett led Riverdale with 18.

The district tournaments start Thursday. The girls will play Gallatin Thursday at 7 p.m. The boys will play Gallatin as well, but on Friday, starting at 7 p.m. 
The semifinals are Saturday at Wilson Central. 
The girls final will be Monday at Wilson Central at 8 p.m. and the boys final will be Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Wilson Central.
