Cody Carr recovered a fumble inside the five-yard line with less than a minute to go to preserve Mt. Juliet’s 21-14 win over Station Camp Friday. The Bison held the Bears out of the end zone in the second half, and came close to battling back, but the Mt. Juliet defense stood strong.
Station Camp had the early lead after a Mt. Juliet fumble on the first play. JaQuel Fitts scored on a 5-yard run a few plays later and the Bison led 7-0.
That lead lasted as long as it took Contrez McCathern to run 80 yards. McCathern took his first carry through the line and off to the races. Ryan Jenkins added the extra point, tying the game up at 7-7.
A few possessions later, Mt. Juliet was set up in Station Camp territory, and two McCathern runs covered 41 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown run. The Bears led 14-7 in the first.
Later in the half, Mt. Juliet took the ball 57 yards on eight plays. Caleb Hopkins executed a fake punt on fourth down with a 26-yard run, and Austin Chaplin scored on a 3-yard run later in the drive. Station Camp got into field goal range just before the half, but couldn’t get points. Mt. Juliet held the 21-7 lead at the break.
Late in the fourth quarter, Station Camp started picking up chunks of yardage on the ground, and Mitchell Abbott got the score. That cut the lead to 21-14.
The Bison got the ball back, and marched it down the field. They were set up with first-and-goal, but Mt. Juliet held on four plays. On fourth down, Manny Colon lost the handle on the ball, and Carr was there to cover it up.
Carr led the defense, as he was in on 17 tackles, 10 of which were solo. McCathern had over 100 yards in the first quarter, and finished with 178 yards on 16 carries.
