10 ways to help Sherry's Run
Tuesday, July 24, 2012

Cancer is an enemy of humanity – taking what is healthy and beautiful and causing physical destruction.  It strikes when you least expect it.  It does not discriminate.  But as one cancer victim described it:  cancer cannot cripple love, it cannot shatter hope, or corrode Faith.  It cannot destroy peace, or kill friendship or suppress memories or silence courage.  It cannot invade the soul or steal eternal life and it cannot ever conquer the spirit.  When you can’t run the race that is before you – we will carry you.  That’s what neighbors do – and that is one of the many reasons that Sherry’s Run is so important. What started as a love for one woman, Sherry, has turned into a fight for all the Sherry’s.   There are many ways in which you can help.  Here are the Top Ten:

1. Let us know if someone you know needs assistance. Sherry’s Run offers financial assistance to local cancer patients. The Sherry’s Run steps to help are easy.  Contact Kathy Fyke, Patient Assistance Director at (615)925-9932 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You may be eligible if: You are in active cancer treatment (any type of cancer); You live in Wilson County or surrounding communities (Smith, DeKalb, Sumner, Trousdale, Macon counties); You are receiving medical treatment in Wilson County or surrounding communities; You work or attend church in Wilson County or surrounding communities; You have a financial need (loss of income/employment due to illness, Medicaid eligible, SSDI, SSI).

2. Register today for the Ninth Annual Sherry’s Run 5K Run/Walk / Form A Team. What started as a love for one woman, Sherry, has turned into a fight for all the Sherry’s.  This is the largest fundraising event of the year.  Log onto www.SherrysRun.org to learn more about the Run and sign up to participate.  The event is on Sept. 8 beginning at 8 a.m.

Form a team in honor of those you love or in memory of those you have lost. Forming a team is a wonderful way to get involved in a great community event. Even though the actual event lasts only a couple of hours, the spirit lasts all year long. A team is any group of ten or more participants. Team members can be all ages and can be a combination of walkers and runners. Because of your participation, people in this community are being helped. Come be a part of the excitement! Call Wendi Warren, Sherry’s Run Board Member and Team Coordinator at (615)400-2032 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

3. Become a Sponsor. It takes a very special company to step up and become a sponsor of Sherry’s Run. It is through these partnerships that hundreds of cancer victims receive help.  To view a list of our sponsors, visit the Sherry’s Run website.  If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please call (615)925-2592.

4. Paint the town...green – LIME GREEN. Paint The Town Green by attaching a Sherry’s Run Bow to your door or mailbox at your home and/or office. You may order Sherry’s Run Bows by contacting Debbie Lamberson, Sherry’s Run Green Bow Coordinator, at 483-3208 or e-mail her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  You may also order them by going to www.SherrysRun.org. The deadline for ordering the bows is Monday, Aug. 22.

5.  Display a Sherry’s Run Poster / Display SR Information to your Outdoor Signage. Tell the world about Sherry’s Run with our official posters. Pop them up in your business or office, classroom, gym or anywhere people will see them.  To coordinate receiving a poster, please call (615)925-2592.

If you own a business with outdoor signage, add:  Register Today for Sept 8 Run at SherrysRun.org to your signage during the month of August – up to the Run date of Sept. 8.

6. Tweet all about it. The number of people with cancer is growing every day. Make sure no one goes through it alone by tweeting your friends and telling them how you’re involved with Sherry’s Run and all that it does to help those right here at home.

7. Tell five friends on Facebook. If Facebook is more your thing, then spread the word here. Tell everyone how the Sherry’s Run team is making a difference or simply share our contact information - just in case there’s someone out there that needs our support.

 8. Host a Fundraiser. Get together with friends, family and colleagues and host a fun fundraiser to raise some money for people affected by cancer. Don your favorite Sherry’s Run t-shirt and develop a fundraiser that reflects your personality.  Our team members have raised money through a variety of events such as bake sales, office decorating contests, turning school sporting events lime-green, and flip-flop/lime-green costume contests. One participant even traveled from Alaska to raise funds on behalf of her sister. Be inspired by the creative ways supporters are raising money or think of your own. There are so many creative ways to have fun and raise money for a good cause.

9.  Wear your favorite Sherry’s Run T-shirt each Friday. Wear your favorite Sherry’s Run T-shirt every Friday beginning in August through the event date.  The ninth annual run will feature a new signature Sherry’s Run color T-shirt.  Wear your shirts from years past to show how long you have been a supporter.

10.  Purchase with purpose. This isn’t really about shopping and buying; although there are a number of very nice, very unique, items that are for sale.  No, this story is about what happens after you buy a Sherry’s Run item…your purchases help people in our communities battling cancer who need our help. Each time you purchase a Sherry’s Run item, the funds go to help those in need.  We invite you to visit our website to learn more about the Sherry’s Run recipients and how your dollars are at work each and every day right here at home.

So why not help someone while looking great?  Go ahead and purchase with a purpose!  Visit the Sherry’s Run event site on Sept. 6-7 between the hours of 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on the West Lawn of Wilson Bank & Trust, 623 West Main St., Lebanon, to buy some really fun Sherry’s Run Gear.  Items are plentiful and include really cute tote bags, a sassy flip-flop necklace, or fun beach towel at a great price and enjoy them all the more knowing that you’ve helped someone by providing discounted medical services, PET scans, and prescriptions; co-pay assistance; gas cards for traveling to appointments and treatments and test kits to help with prevention and awareness.
