The City of Mt. Juliet is trying to sell Station 3 behind City Hall to Wilson County to help pay for a new fire station on Lebanon Road.
WEMA Station 3 is owned by Mt. Juliet, but has been rented out to WEMA for several years for just a $1 a year. The agreement was that if WEMA covered fire and ambulance in Mt. Juliet, Mt. Juliet would offer them a home virtually rent free.
“The agreement between us has changed,” said Mt. Juliet City Manager Kenny Martin.
Martin said with the opening of Station 1 in Providence, and a Station 2 in the works on Lebanon Road, both run by the Mt. Juliet Fire Department, changed that agreement with WEMA on fire protection. Martin said he approached Wilson County Mayor Randall Hutto about the station, and he was receptive to the idea. If Mt. Juliet builds the station on Lebanon Road, which will possibly be on the Environmental Science property, that would give both WEMA and Mt. Juliet Fire a station at Saundersville Road, Lebanon Road, behind City Hall, Providence and Gladeville, which would help both entities have better coverage in the area.
So far the buying of the property has passed the Wilson County EMA committee unanimously according to Martin. Martin said if the sell does go through, he will use the money to help purchase the property on Lebanon Road, which he hopes to be able to completely equip for the same amount of money as the Providence station, around 1.5 million.
