MJ man to play National Anthem 100 times in 2014
Tuesday, January 14, 2014

In honor of the 200th Anniversary of the Star Spangled Banner, Steven Smartt has set a personal goal to perform the National Anthem 100 times during 2014. He welcomes invitations from schools, civic organizations, sporting events, and any occasion where a performance of the National Anthem (on solo trumpet) would be appropriate. And, yes, everyone is encouraged to sing along. He started his journey Thursday morning at Lakeview Elementary School.
Steven Smartt, Ph.D., resides in Mt. Juliet and has worked as a research and academic administrator at Vanderbilt University for more than 30 years. He also is a part-time professional musician and performs with several bands and artists, locally and nationally. He is a volunteer teacher at the W.O. Smith Community Music School in Nashville. The 2014 National Anthem project seeks to promote historical awareness of the Star Spangled Banner and the National Anthem, and to honor America.
