Charles Vernon Duncan, Mt. Juliet, “Poppy”, 75, passed away Oct. 8. 

Duncan served in the U.S. Air Force. He was always willing to help someone, and he was always for the underdog. 

He is survived by: his wife for nearly 50 years, Felicia Childress Duncan; children, Brad Duncan (Tammy) and DeAna Duncan Elwell (Derek); grandchildren, Morgan O’Neill (Brian), Taylor Johnson (Lunden), Madelynn Duncan, Henry Elwell and Charlie Elwell; great grandchildren, Breklyn Johnson and Tynleigh Johnson; nephew, Richard Duncan; nieces, Hallee Childress and Natalie Childress; and a host of wonderful friends. A Celebration of Life service was Monday, Oct. 13 with Rev. Sandra Clay officiating at Hermitage Funeral Home. A military burial followed at Hermitage Memorial Gardens. Visitation with the family was Sunday and prior to the service Monday at the funeral home.

Juanita Graves, 71, Mt. Juliet passed away Oct. 7. 

She was a member of Center Chapel church of Christ and a graduate of Donelson High School. Preceded in death by husband, Joe Graves; and parents, Goebel and Louise Peercy. Survived by children, Debbie (Ricky) Tignor, Jody (Gayla) Graves and Bryan (Angie) Graves; brother, Alton “Joe” Peercy; grandchildren, Amanda (Kassie) Briley, Jesse Tignor, Blake Tignor, Bri Graves and Amber Graves; and great-grandchild, Kody Graves.

Funeral services wereFriday, Oct. 10 at Center Chapel church of Christ with Bro. Andy Connelly, Bro. Darrell Duncan and Bro. John Brown officiating. Interment followed the service at Mt. Juliet Memorial Gardens with Jesse Tignor, Blake Tignor, Greg Graves, Mike Graves, Buddy Escue and Chris Peercy serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers: Ladies’ Bible Class at Center Chapel. Visitation with the family was Thursday, Oct. 9 at Sellars Funeral Home at Mt. Juliet and Friday, Oct. 10 at Center Chapel church of Christ.

Luther Winfield Loyd, 90, Donelson, passed away Oct. 7. 

Loyd served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. 

He is preceded in death by wife, Lorene “Renee” Loyd. 

He is survived by: son, David A. Loyd (Faye); grandchildren, Ben Loyd (Jill), Ryan Loyd “Kare” and Jill Neal (Kevin); great-grandchildren, Zac Loyd, Eli Loyd, Avery Loyd, Barron Loyd, Charley Neal and Gabe Neal. 

A funeral service was conducted Thursday, Oct. 9 at the Hermitage Funeral Home with Tim Martin officiating. Burial will follow in the Hermitage Memorial Gardens with Navy Military Honors. 

Visitation with the family was Thursday and prior to the service Friday at the funeral home. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or Nashville Rescue Mission.

Reuben Samuel Odum, Sr., born July 7, 1948 left this earth Oct. 4 after a long battle with cancer. 

Sam was an avid UT fan and proudly displayed that by the amount of UT memorabilia in his man cave. Despite being disabled due to a brain aneurysm and stroke in 1987; Sam lived life beyond his disabilities and enjoyed life to its fullest. He leaves behind a host of family and friends to mourn his passing. Preceded in death by parents James Edwin and Eva May Odum; daughter, Tammy Carpenter; brothers Lewis and Roy Odum, and Willie McKinyon; and sister, Helen Meek. 

He is survived by: wife, Pam; sons, Reuben Samuel “Sammy” Odum Jr., and Terry Odum; brother, Danny Odum; grandchildren, April and Adam Carpenter, Cassidy, Cameron, and Cara Odum. 

We wish to express our thanks to Alive Hospice and their staff; especially, Sandy Minor for the good care she provided to Sam; also, volunteer Ray Smith who spent many hours sitting with Sam. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson Street, Nashville, TN 37203.

Robert Garner Read,  80, Hermitage, died Oct. 12. 

Read was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was retired from Bell South with 36 years of service. Mr. Read also was employed by the Hermitage Walmart for 25 years. He was an avid fisherman and golfer. Mr. Read was the son of the late, John W. and Tennie Smith Read. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Thelma Hamblen, Cotton Read and John L. Read. 

He is survived by: wife of 30 years, Dean Rodgers Read; children, David (Tammie) Read, Debra (David) Carver, Kelly (Gerald) Simpson, Connie Skelton, Alan (Kathy) Combs and Tony (Shelly) CombsGrandchildren – Laura, Keith, Kenzie, Nolan, Hannah, Braden, Riley, Daniel, Travis, Chris, Jenny, Annie, Chelsea and Haley; nine great-grandchildren; nieces, Judy Wilkes and Cindy Read.

Funeral services will be conducted 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Bond Memorial Chapel with Travis Skelton officiating.  Interment will be private. Honorary pallbearers will be Rebecca Hung, MD, Joseph Fredi, MD, Arvindh Kanagasundram, MD, Layla Cochran, RN and the Vanderbilt Heart Institute Study and Research Teams.

Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to The American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
