Sara Margaret “Peggy” Williams Speich, 69, wife of Rev. Garry Speich, died March 29 in Crossville where she and her husband had retired. They had served together in ministry at United Methodist Churches in Sparta, Gallatin, Old Hickory, Mt. Juliet, Clarksville, Hermitage and on the Nashville District. She was the daughter of Rev. & Mrs. J. Paul Williams. They have one son Eric (wife Jennifer) who lives in Mt. Juliet and is a pilot with the Averitt Trucking Company. 

She leaves a much loved sister Mary Ann MacKenzie, a brother Rev. John P Williams and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews who loved her dearly. 

Peggy was a graduate of East High School, Martin Methodist College & Tennessee Tech. She taught in Nashville Public Schools and in the Title Programs for 30 plus years. She was active in each church as a church school teacher, a leader in United Methodist Women, a choir member, a Stephen Minister, and in scores of other ways. She participated in the development of the prayer ministry of the Upper Room and in the early development of the Walk to Emmaus. Peggy was an excellent cook and for 10 years owned a catering business with a friend. Peggy loved to travel and was blessed to have gone to many places in the world. She has a great wit and a constant smile. She loved working with children and youth and was a great mentor to many. She had a large number of friends, many dating back to her college days and from the churches where they served. Memorial gifts may be given to Martin Methodist College or to the Miriam’s Promise Adoption Ministries. A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 7th at 3pm at the Hermitage United Methodist Church on Belinda Drive in Hermitage.

Richard Lewis Atwood, 69, Mt. Juliet, died Sunday, March 17. 

Atwood was a member of Grace Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving on the U.S.S. Ordax and the U.S.S. Thornback (SS418). Mr. Atwood was a member of the VFW Post No. 1291, the American Legion Post No. 281, Voiture Locale No. 1391 and the USSVI Volunteer Base for 10 years. He retired from Western Electric/AT&T after 25 years of service. Atwood was a lifetime member of the Community Workers of America and the Telephone Pioneers. He was a member of the Mt. Juliet-West Wilson Historical Society and a volunteer at the Wilson County Archives. Atwood was the son of the late, William Franklin Atwood, Sr. and Myrtle Mae Halpin Atwood. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Jane Elizabeth Atwood Felts and Ann Frances Atwood Syvarth and brothers, William Franklin Atwood, Jr., Edwin Emmett Atwood, James Donald Atwood and Robert Turner Atwood.

He is survived by: wife of 39 years, Dixie Lee Atwood; children, Regina Carol Robinson, Andrew Thomas (Linda) Atwood,  and Christopher Atwood; brother, John Wesley (Sue) Atwood, M.D.; sister, Mary Lou Atwood Scribner; grandson, Jacob Hunter Robinson.

Funeral services were Friday, March 22, at Bond Memorial Chapel with Pastor Alan Herd officiating. Interment with military honors followed at Hermitage Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will serve as active pallbearers.

Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to the Gideons International, the Mt. Juliet Animal Shelter or the American Cancer Society.

Shirley Ann Banta-Clegg, 65, Lebanon, died Friday, March 22. 

Shirley was a member of Mt. Juliet Church of Christ. She was a paralegal in her early career and later served as the Executive Assistant to the Secretary of State of the United States, James Baker, III during the George H. Bush Administration. Shirley is the daughter of the late, Newell Cordell and Mary Lou Thornburg Banta.

She is survived by: son, Michael (Kristi Shearon) Schmitz of Lebanon; sisters, Patty Willoughby of Mt. Juliet, Jeanette Davis of Commerce, Ga.             and Carolyn Rose of Memphis; several nieces and nephews; dog, Daisy.

Albert Ellis Gardner,  57, Madison, passed Friday, March 22. 

Gardner was a member of the Baptist faith. He was well known for his involvement in motorsports in the Middle Tennessee area. He was also an avid Razorback fan. Gardner was the son of the late, Albert Ellis and Bessie Viola Greene Gardner. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Joe Allen Gardner and Jimmy Wayne Gardner. 

He is survived by: wife Glenda Gardner; children, Ellisa and Ellis (Katie) Gardner and Douglas and Andrew Pillow; brother, Billy Gardner; grandchildren, Bradley, Kaley Viola and Anderson.

Funeral services were Monday, March 25 at Victory Baptist Church, 1777 Tate Lane, Mt. Juliet, TN with Donnie Bryant officiating. Interment followed at Hermitage Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Wayne White, Rick Dixon, Jerry Criswell, Jimmy Gardner, Willis Keeton, John Armstrong, Mike Odom and Jay Crump. Following the burial there will be a reception for family and friends at Ravenwood Country Club, 1176 Stones River Road, Hermitage, TN.

David Charles Kendall,  63, Watertown, died Monday, March 11. 

David was the son of the late George Dennis Kendall and Leota Gillespie Jacobs. He was a former employee of Caterpillar Financial of Nashville. 

He is survived by: wife, Patricia Kendall; sons, Adam Kendall, Eric (Kim) Kendall, Bill (Debbie) Chitwood and Ken Chitwood, Sr.; daughter, Angel Rothenay; brothers, Mark G. (Marty) Kendall and Aaron Clifton; sister, Cindy Clifton; grandchildren, Dayna and Natilie Kendall, Renee (Travis) Battjes, Ken (Leilani) Chitwood, Jr., Tiffany (Levi) Powell and Billy Chitwood; great-grandchildren, Kade and Kyla Battjes, Jason Chitwood and Abby and Michael Powell.
