The Wilson Central Wildcats traveled to LaVergne Friday in a match-up of two teams that are looking for their first win of the season.
LaVergne jumped out to a big lead in the first half, but Central came roaring back for a 45-34 win.
The Wolverines received the ball to start the game. Central’s defense came out strong and looked as if they would get a quick 3 and out. However, after swapping penalties, Wolverine QB C.J. Fore threw a 63 yard TD pass to take the lead 7-0.
On their first possession Central wasted no time with Alex Price ripping off a 69 yard run to tie the score at 7-7.
On their next possession, the Wolverines moved down the field going 80 yards in 11 plays, capped by a 35 yard touchdown pass by Fore. In less than five minutes of play the score was already 14-7.
The Wolverines got the ball back after a missed field goal and marched down the field again, going 73 yards in nine plays, capped off by a second touchdown from Fore to Quinn Jernighan for a 21-7 lead.
The Wildcats got the ball back at the end of a first quarter. Apparently seeing a mismatch on the right side, Central gave LaVergne a heavy dose of running around the right side. Butler, Jordan Wilson, Alex Price, and D’Sean Osborne all got carries as the Wildcats went 70 yards in 8 plays. Sophomore Wilson punched the ball in from 1-yard out for his first score and to bring Central within one score.
The Wildcats got the ball back and went on a nine minute drive going 75 yards on four plays. However, because of a penalty on second down, Central was unable to punch it in from the five. Cavanough did convert a 27-yard field goal to make it 21-17.
The Wolverines then quickly marched down the field, aided by a personal foul by Central, going 65 yards in 20 seconds to take a halftime lead of 28-17.
After halftime, Central wasted no time going 68 yards in three plays. The drive was capped by a 54 yard rush by sophomore Wilson bringing Central within four, at 28-24.
A few possessions later, Price set up the next drive by returning the punt 28 yards to LaVergne’s 27 yard line. Three plays later, Osborne took it in from 11 yards out. The extra point by Cavanough gave the Wildcats the first lead of the night at 31-28.
After Central forced a turnover, a double reverse to Price, set up Jordan Roundtree from one yard out. Central extended the lead 38-28.
The Wolverines were not going to roll over as they came out and on the first play of the drive got another score. Fore hooked up with Jernigan for a 72 yard pass for a touchdown. The Wolverines went for two and it was no good.
LaVergne had an onside kick and Weston Rountree took it for a touchdown, however a block in the back brought it back to LaVergne’s 30 yard line. Kyle Coombs opened up a 25 yard down to the 5. Two plays later Coombs took the ball in for a score.
The score was now 45-34, and even though there was 2:04 on the clock, LaVergne attempted a field goal, but would not be able to score again.
Central ended the game with 404 yards rushing the ball, led by Alex Price with 140 yards.
Roundtree was 4-9 for 75 yards. LaVergne had 396 yards in passing.
Next week Central travels for the third week in a row to open the season, going to Portland (0-2).
