The Wilson Central Wildcats traveled to the Portland Panthers on Friday to face a team that had yet to score any points in its first two games.
The Wildcats defense did not break the streak as they kept the Panthers offense scoreless. The only blemish was when the Wildcats let the Panthers Bryant Dowland return a kickoff for a touchdown.
Even with the return, the Panthers were never in the game as Central easily won 26-7.
Central’s defense set the pace for the game as they came out and forced Portland to go three and out on the opening drive, aided by Preston Reed who tipped a pass. Central’s offense came out and on the first play and Jordan Roundtree hit Blake Lea with a 40 yard pass for a touchdown. Brad Cavanough hit the extra point and Central jumped to a quick 7-0 lead.
On their next drive, the Panthers began moving the ball. They ran 12 plays, but the Wildcats got a stop on fourth down, ending the drive.
Central came back out, looking like they were going to easily score again as Alex Price ripped off a 33 yard run. However, the drive stalled on the 26 of the Panthers and Cavanough came through with a 43 yard field goal to bring Central’s lead 10-0 with 19 seconds to go in the first quarter.
Central’s offense later came out for what would be the last drive of the half. The Wildcats started with the ball on their own 45. Roundtree and Hunter Wilson had rushes of 12 yards each and Roundtree his Gabe Angel with a 19 yard pass. However, with time expiring, Central was having a hard time punching it in from inside the 10. As time expired, Cavanough hit a 27 yard field goal to take the lead into the half 13-0.
Central’s offense was not able to get anything done on the opening drive of the second half. However, Cavanough had a 71 yard punt, pinning the Panther’s on their own 5 yard line.
Central’s defense limited the Panthers’ offense and forced a punt.
On their next possession, it was the Kyle Coombes show as he had runs of 12 and 25 yards and a reception for 12 yards. Price had a 7-yard run and Weston Rountree punch the ball in from the two. Cavanough’s kick was good and Central took a 20-0 lead in the third. On the kickoff, Central allowed Panther’s Bryant Dowland to go 97 yards and return the kickoff for a touchdown.
Central’s offense came back out after Price had a great return to the Panther’s 45. Central moved down the field with runs of 12 yards each by Jordan Wilson and Coombes. The drive was capped by 24 yard pass from Roundtree to Jordan Wilson for a touchdown. The extra point was blocked and Central took the lead, 26-7.
Next week Central travels for the fourth week in a row to open the season, going 160 miles all the way to Cleveland (2-1). Kickoff will be 7 p.m. Eastern, 6 p.m. Central.
