On Senior Night at Mt. Juliet Christian Academy, it was fitting that a pair of seniors keyed a come from behind 34-30 win against District foe Zion Christian Academy last Friday night.

On its first possession of the game, Saints senior quarterback Ric Van Mali connected with Landon Boyd on a 50-yard touchdown pass to take the initial 7-0 lead.  The Zion Eagles took the ensuing kickoff on a long scoring drive for their first touchdown of the night and added another touchdown (extra point failed) with 4:20 left in the half. The Zion Eagles took advantage of a Saints interception near the end of the second quarter to score a field goal and took a 16-7 lead into the intermission.

On its first possession of the second half, MJCA quarterback Ric Van Mali, threw an interception which was returned for an Eagles touchdown and Zion Christian’s largest lead of the night at 23-7.

MJCA’s fortunes took a sharp turn for the better when the Saints scored thirteen points in less than a minute.  Quarterback, Ric Van Mali completed a 60 yard scoring drive by running the ball in for the score -  but a two-point conversion attempt failed at the 6:53 mark. On the ensuing possession, Zion fumbled on their own thirteen yard line. Only 41 seconds later, a Van Mali touchdown pass to sophomore receiver, Race McLean, closed the Zion lead to three points at 23-20.

The Eagles increased their lead to ten points on a 40 yard touchdown pass play and carried a 30-20 lead into the fourth quarter.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, Saints quarterback, Van Mali threw a touchdown scoring pass to fellow senior, David Lee, to pull the Saints again to within three points of the Eagles at 30-27.

With 2:50 remaining in the game, senior running back, David Lee, breaking tackle after tackle rumbled 70 yards for his second touchdown of the night, giving the Saints a 34-30 lead.  Zion Christian attempted a comeback of their own - but with no time outs and forced to pass, the Eagles’ final pass was intercepted by defensive back, Daniel Bohme to seal the victory for the Saint’s third win of the season.

MJCA closes out the 2013 season at Donelson Christian Academy next Friday with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
