Mt. Juliet closed the 2013 football season with a win Friday, blowing out Portland, 49-6.
The Bears scored early and often, putting up 25 points in the first quarter.
Six runs was all that was needed for the first score, as Courtland Douglas, playing in his final game as a Bear, scored from 16 yards out.
Peyton Haynes helped extend the score with a 28-yard pick six.
On Portland’s next play, Brigham Powell, also playing in his final game, came up with a fumble recovery to give the ball back to the Bears.
Mt. Juliet would turn the ball back over, but on their next possession, Kyle Mahler rumbled for a 52-yard score. Alex Landis would run it in for the 2-point conversion to make it 22-0.
The Bears would get deep into Panther territory on their next possession, but wouldn’t get into the end zone. Freshman Jacob Bailey would knock in the 26-yard field goal to make it 25-0.
In the second quarter, the Panthers left senior Logan Hyder uncovered, and Landis found him for a 34-yard score.
Sidney Willis got the ball back for the Bears when he stripped the football from the quarterback and recovered it. Bailey would add another field goal, this time from 35 yards to make the score 35-0 at the half.
Many freshman and sophomores got playing time in the second half. Trey Pruitt and E.J. Sanders would get scores on touchdown runs. Portland would add a touchdown run late as well.
