Teacher salary raises approved; Percentage of tax hike to improve teacher pay

The school district in Wilson County is budged to receive an annual average of 2.9 million from the Wilson County property tax rate increase.

The Wilson County Commission voted and approved a property tax increase of 35.17 in Wilson County at the board meeting last Monday evening in Lebanon.

The amount sums up to $8.1 cents of the tax increased that will go towards teachers’ base pay.

Increases  of teacher salaries apply to certified teachers only.

Teachers with (0-5) years of teaching experience and hired within the 2016-2017 school year, regardless of amount of experience, will receive an additional $1,000 onto their base salary pay.

Educators with (6-9) years of experience will receive $2,000 additionally to their base pay.

Teachers with (10 or more) years of educational experience will receive an additional $3,000 to their pay.

Teacher Salary raises-Donna Wright“It was a collective effort by the Wilson County Board of Education, validated by our County Commission, to recognize the excellent instruction provided by our teachers, every day, on behalf of our students,” said Director of Wilson County Schools, Donna Wright.

“We continue, as a district, to experience substantial student success and it is simply appropriate to reward our teachers for their work and dedication,” said superintendent, Wright.

Concerns from administration and educators on fairness of pay has been an issue in the district due to loop-holes.

When brand new teachers make more of a salary than a veteran teacher with years of experience, that seems to raise eyebrows over the equality of teachers.

It was mentioned in the board meeting last Monday evening that a teacher with years of experience could quit and be re-hired making the advance pay rate of a new school teacher.

Although many wish there had been another alternative for the tax hike, the Commission’s decision to approve the increase and its result to benefit the well-deserved pay raises for teachers in Wilson County was a positive outcome for all.
