Mt. Juliet’s baseball season came to a close Wednesday in a 4-3 loss to Riverdale.
A day after losing to defending state champion Farragut, 14-10, the Bears fell behind Riverdale 4-0 before scratching out a run.
Cody Carr singled, and Hunter Gilbert doubled to put runners at second and third. Zach Tompkins singled home Carr, but Gilbert got hung up between third and home, and was tagged out.
Down to their final three outs, Mt. Juliet put a rally together. Derek Bailey started things off with a single, and Carr reached on a fielder’s choice. Gilbert reached on an error, and advanced to second. Tompkins grounded out, but got scored Carr. Kyle Smith singled through the left side, scoring Gilbert and making it 4-3. Smith would advance to second on a wild pitch, but Riverdale pitcher Jonathan King was able to strike out pinch hitter Austyn Dyer to eliminate the Bears.
Arlington eventually won the AAA State Championship with a 9-3 win over Bearden.
Mt. Juliet broke a school record this year with 38 wins on the season. Senior Conner Sugg also broke a state record for most saves in a single season.

Mt. Juliet softball’s season came to a close Wednesday in a 4-3 loss to Daniel Boone.
The Lady Bears started the Spring Fling with a 6-5 loss to Munford, and fell behind 4-0 to Boone.
In the bottom of the fourth, Rachel Atnip got things going with a triple to right. Shelby Woodard followed with a single to short. Lauren Woodard grounded out, but brought in the first run. Ashton Stowe singled to left, scoring another run. Lauren Payne brought in the final RBI of the inning on a single.
That would be the only runs that Mt. Juliet could get on Boone pitcher Kellie Waycaster.
Boone made it to the finals, but couldn’t get past Soddy-Daisy, who won the AAA State Championship with a 7-0 victory.
