School board vote approves new school calendars
The Wilson County School Board met on Monday evening, September 12th, and voted to approve a new school year calendar for 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years.
The committee has studied the impact that longer extended school breaks have on students during the school year.
According to studies, longer extended periods of intersession tend to have a negative impact on attendance, testing, and other disadvantages that the two-week break affects.
After much discussion of the length of breaks, the School Board unanimously approved the new calendar idea putting into effect starting next fall in 2017.
The new calendar will be very similar to the current school year calendar but will differ when it comes to seasonal and holiday breaks.
The calendar will allow one-week for fall break which then gives a full week for Thanksgiving break rather than a couple of days for the heavily traveled holiday.
