Woman resists officers after shoplifting arrest

After assaulting officers while she attempted to escape custody during her arrest for shoplifting, 35-year-old Latasha Jiles of Murfreesboro remains in jail on seven charges related to the incident.

On Thursday, Nov. 2, 2017, around noon, officers were summoned to Walmart, at 300 Pleasant Grove Rd., in reference to shoplifting suspects that had fled from Academy Sports and Outdoors, at 549 Pleasant Grove Rd.

When officers arrived they found one suspect, a 17-year-old male from Nashville, in a parked vehicle in Walmart’s parking lot. During that investigation, officers were alerted of a new shoplifting incident at Walmart.

Further investigation revealed that after Jiles and the 17-year-old accomplice shoplifted multiple pairs of tennis shoes at Academy, both fled to Walmart to commit an additional theft while the juvenile remained with the car. After Jiles shoplifted at Walmart by pushing out a cart full of merchandise, officers were able to take her into custody.

While in custody, Jiles attempted to escape by fleeing to her vehicle and resisting arrest. Two officers regained custody of Jiles, but in the process, received lacerations on their hands and head. Both officers were treated by medics on the scene and released.

Jiles was arrested and booked into the Wilson County Jail under a $6,000 bond, charged with Felony Escape of Custody, Resisting Arrest, Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor, 2 counts of Theft of Merchandise, and 2 counts of Criminal Trespass.

The 17-year-old male accomplice, who is not related to Jiles, was charged with Theft of Merchandise and released to a guardian.
